| It is my great pleasure to include
here one of our contemporary family members. I have long been a fan of
his, and was thrilled to find that he is a member of our family!
Septime Webre was born December 7th 1961 in New
Orleans Louisiana, to Alfred Lambremont Webre, Jr and his wife Juanita
Chisolm. He is the seventh of eight sons and one daughter. He
was named in honor of Joseph Septime Webre, his great grandfather,
who was also the seventh son of his family.
Septime, the son of an American father and a
Cuban mother, is the first child of his family to be born in the
United States. The first five of his siblings were born in Cuba, the
last three, including Septime, were born in the United States after the
family fled Cuba during Fidel Castro's revolution in 1960. His mother was 7
months pregnant with her sixth child. They initially moved to Bahamas,
then later settled in Brownsville, Texas, on the U.S. border with Mexico.
Septime began studying at the University of
Texas, in Austin, where he graduated with a B.A. in history and pre-law.
It was at U.T. that he took his first dance class, and, as they
say, the rest is history! He began studying ballet and in 1987,
joined the American Repertory Ballet as a dancer and became resident
choreographer and artistic director. In June of 1999, he was named the
artistic director of The Washington Ballet.
